Bengaluru, March 30, 2026:
What was meant to be a thrilling start to the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season turned unsettling for many fans at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, as multiple mobile phone thefts were reported during the opening match between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Amid a packed stadium and high-energy atmosphere on March 28, dozens of spectators reportedly lost their phones, raising serious concerns over crowd control and security arrangements at one of India’s most prominent cricket venues.

Multiple Thefts Reported During Peak Crowd Movement

According to police officials, at least 30 cases of mobile phone theft have been formally reported so far. However, eyewitness accounts and social media claims suggest the actual number could be significantly higher, with some estimates ranging between 50 to 60 devices—particularly from the P3 stand.

Most incidents reportedly occurred during the second innings when spectators moved out of their seats for refreshments, creating dense crowd pockets that may have enabled pickpockets to operate unnoticed. Complaints have also emerged from areas near stadium entry gates and nearby transit points, including metro access zones.

Authorities confirmed that several complaints have been officially registered, while others have been submitted digitally through police reporting platforms.

Suspected Organised Activity Under Investigation

Preliminary investigations indicate the possibility of an organised pickpocketing operation. Police have detained several suspects, including minors, and are examining CCTV footage from multiple points within and around the stadium.

Some victims have alleged that groups of individuals, possibly working in coordination, targeted distracted spectators during peak movement periods. A few stolen devices have been recovered, but the majority remain untraced.

Officials stated that questioning is ongoing and further arrests may follow as the investigation progresses.

Victims Raise Concerns Over Security Response

Several affected spectators have expressed dissatisfaction with the initial response from on-ground security personnel, claiming their complaints were not immediately taken seriously. Many later approached nearby police stations to formally file reports, where they reportedly found multiple others facing similar issues.

The incident has sparked widespread criticism online, with fans demanding stricter entry checks, better surveillance, and improved crowd management systems at IPL venues.

History of Similar Incidents Raises Alarm

This is not the first time such concerns have surfaced at large sporting events in India. In previous IPL seasons, similar reports of pickpocketing and theft have emerged from stadiums in cities like Mumbai and Chennai, especially during high-attendance matches.

Additionally, crowd management at the Chinnaswamy Stadium has been under scrutiny in the past. A tragic stampede incident during an earlier celebration event at the venue had already raised questions about safety preparedness and emergency response systems.

Experts note that large gatherings, combined with limited monitoring in seating areas, often create opportunities for organised theft groups to operate.

Police Advisory for Spectators

In light of the recent incidents, police have urged spectators to remain vigilant in crowded environments. Fans attending upcoming matches have been advised to:

  • Avoid carrying valuables unnecessarily
  • Use secure pockets or anti-theft accessories
  • Enable mobile tracking features
  • Stay cautious during entry, exit, and break intervals

Authorities have assured that additional security measures may be implemented for upcoming matches as the IPL 2026 season continues.

Ongoing Investigation

Police teams are continuing their investigation, with a clearer estimate of total losses expected in the coming days as more complaints are registered. Officials remain optimistic about identifying the culprits and recovering additional stolen devices.

While the on-field action delivered excitement, the incident has cast a shadow over the tournament’s opening, highlighting the urgent need for stronger security protocols at major sporting events.
